Lee Abbey London was founded in 1964 as a not-for-profit charity with a simple but lasting vision: to provide safe, welcoming accommodation for students arriving in London from around the world. More than sixty years later, that vision continues to guide everything we do.
Retreats and houseparties in Devon
Our story begins in Devon, in the beautiful countryside of southwest England. The name “Lee Abbey” comes from a historic country house and estate that became a Christian retreat centre in 1946, and welcomes people to this day. There, people found space for spiritual renewal, hospitality, and community, values that continue to define the Lee Abbey Movement today.
A new home in London
As the movement grew, its leaders recognised the challenges faced by international students coming to London. Many struggled to find affordable, safe, and supportive accommodation while adjusting to life in a new country.
In response, the Lee Abbey International Students’ Club was established in London in 1964. Its purpose was not simply to provide a place to stay, but to create a genuine home where students would be welcomed, cared for, and supported as they settled into life in the city.
The journey continues
Today, Lee Abbey London continues that same mission. We remain committed to offering more than accommodation by creating a vibrant international community where hospitality, friendship, faith, and service come together to make every resident feel at home.
